Sir Keir Starmer told his supporters during his leadership campaign that he would help local party members choose their candidates for every election.
Unfortunately for Wakefield Labour supporters, this is not the case, since the Labour National Executive Committee overruled the local party to impose their candidate. According to reports, this candidate had run in four prior elections in various locations and had failed to win each time.
Keir Starmer drew fury on Twitter today after tweeting: “Catching up with Labour’s candidate for Wakefield, @simonlightwood.”
“The Tories have let Wakefield down.”
“Simon is a champion for his local community: he will support hardworking families and businesses.”
“I know Simon will bring the fresh start that Wakefield deserves.”
One supporter commented on the sentence “Simon is a champion for his local community,” stating “His local community? He isn’t from Wakefield, this is your 4th attempt to get him elected in Yorkshire, and you had to stitch the process up to even get him on the ballot”
This wasnt the only message, another said, “Why did the NEC choose the candidate for Wakefield Sir Keir?” Then showed a picture of Keir Starmer pledging local Labour Party member choosing their candidates for elections.
This raises concerns about trust. How can anybody believe Keir Starmer’s national promises if he can’t honour his pledges to his own party members?
