On Friday, the European Commission proposed that Ukraine be awarded candidate status to join the EU, bringing it one step closer to membership.
On Friday, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said, “It’s the first step on the EU membership path that’ll certainly bring our victory closer. Grateful to @vonderleyen & each (EU) member for a historic decision.”
Ursula von der Leyen, who was dressed in the yellow and blue of Ukraine’s flag, stated, “Ukraine has clearly demonstrated the country’s aspiration and the country’s determination to live up to European values and standards,”
In Brussels, the commission’s president continued to say, “We already know that Ukrainians are ready to die for a European perspective. We want them to live with us, the European Union,”
