“We need to move away from the ECHR definition of asylum,” Rishi Sunak sets out his stall on the current Channel Migrant Crisis.

During tonight’s Conservative leadership debate, Rishi Sunak was asked about what he would do to tackle illegal migration in the Channel. Rishi said that he had a point-by-point plan on his website but explained a couple of his points.

One of the points he made was to “move away from the ECHR definition of asylum” because the definition is too broad. Mr Sunak said he would instead move to the refugee convention, “which is another international legal standard, but it is narrower and tighter and will give us a greater ability to say to people you can’t stay.”
