Kate becomes the first Princess of Wales after Diana and proclaims that she will “create her own path.”

Catherine, Duchess of Cornwall and Cambridge, is the first royal since Princess Diana to be called Princess of Wales.

After Queen Elizabeth II’s death on September 8, 2022, King Charles III addressed the United Kingdom at 6 p.m. on Friday. During his speech, the new King spoke warmly of his family and specifically addressed Prince William and Kate.

During his speech, King Charles III referred to Kate as the “Princess of Wales.”

He said: “As my Heir, William now assumes the Scottish titles which have meant so much to me.”

“He succeeds me as Duke of Cornwall and takes on the responsibilities for the Duchy of Cornwall which I have undertaken for more than five decades.”

“Today, I am proud to create him Prince of Wales, Tywysog Cymru, the country whose title I have been so greatly privileged to bear during so much of my life and duty.

“With Catherine beside him, our new Prince and Princess of Wales will, I know, continue to inspire and lead our national conversations, helping to bring the marginal to the centre ground where vital help can be given.”

While Camilla was formally the Princess of Wales by means of her marriage to Prince Charles, she did not utilise the title to distance herself from Diana.

The official website for the Prince of Wales, which has been taken down in honour of the Queen’s death, says that the title “is normally  passed on when the existing Prince of Wales accedes to the throne.”

However, the title is not automatically inherited, therefore Prince William and Kate will only obtain the titles if Charles bestows them.

Sunday Times royal editor Roya Nikkhah cited a source as saying that William and Kate are “looking to the future” in their new positions.

The source reported: “The couple are focused on deepening the trust and respect of the people of Wales over time.

“The Prince and Princess of Wales will approach their roles in the modest and humble way they’ve approached their work previously.

“The new Princess of Wales appreciates the history associated with this role but will understandably want to look to the future as she creates her own path.”
