About 200 masked and hooded men threw bottles and fireworks at a Hindu Temple in Smethwick, West Mids on Tuesday. Cars were damaged and officers in riot gear came under attack, while an 18-year-old was held on suspicion of carrying a knife. Express: Recent tensions in Leicester now spread to Birmingham
Birmingham is currently experiencing the same sectarian tensions that have roiled Leicester in recent weeks.
On Tuesday in Smethwick, West Mids, some 200 men wearing masks and hoods hurled bottles and fireworks at a Hindu temple.
An 18-year-old was detained on suspicion of carrying a weapon as cars were vandalised and riot gear-clad police officers were attacked.
A mob formed after a contentious speaker was initially scheduled to address worshipers but was subsequently withdrawn.
Labour councillor Ahmad Bostan from neighbouring Sandwell said: “The despicable scenes witnessed in Smethwick tonight do not represent the harmonious, rich diversity of our town.”
Following fights between Muslim and Hindu men in Leicester that started in late August and resulted in 47 arrests during the weekend, there was unrest at the Durga Bhawan temple.
The altercation there on Saturday resulted in the injuries of sixteen police officers and a police dog.
