Suella Braverman was forced to defend herself amid claims she ignored legal advice to combat overcrowding for Chanel migrants at Manston airfield in Kent.
The Home Secretary raged at a “political witch hunt” as she claimed it was “practically impossible” to house all the migrants following harsh criticism of her re-appointment and the conditions at migrant centers.
It comes as 4,000 migrants are housed at Manston, which has a capacity of around 1,600 and only a processing centre designed for migrants to spend 24 hours there.
Allies of former Home Secretary Priti Patel are suggesting Ms Braverman is at fault, accusing the new Home Office of breaking the law.
One ally said: “Priti kept signing hotels off over summer no matter how unpalatable it was because it was the right thing to do to keep in line with statutory duties and make sure that people were not sleeping in awful conditions.”
A second ally said there are “saddened” to see the office “brought into such disrepute”.
