Jacob Rees-Mogg asserts the Civil Service is bending to EU pressure and Brexit is in danger.

Following reports of Civil Service cautions over the difficulty of dumping thousands of EU rules, Jacob Rees-Mogg has claimed that the benefits of Brexit are in danger.

When Britain exited the European Union on January 31, 2020, the laws of the union were incorporated into domestic law.

Legislation being considered by lawmakers would invalidate any laws from the European Union that were carried over from Brexit.

They were preserved for the duration of the transition, which ended in January 2021. The UK saving £191 billion by not having to pay into a stimulus programme from the European Union is only one of the “major Brexit successes,” according to the former Business Secretary.

Many people have expressed concern that removing thousands of EU rules that are still in effect would be too much for the UK government to handle.

However, Mr Rees-Mogg criticises the 4,000 preserved EU rules that continue to “lie mouldering” on the UK’s statute book in an opinion article that was published in the Telegraph.

Mr Rees-Mogg referred to the civil servants’ concerns that hundreds of additional employees would be required to implement the legislation as “obstructionism dressed up as idleness.”

He continues by asserting that the Emissions Trading Scheme (ETS) of the EU is harming British steel companies.

He advocates either getting rid of ETS or changing it since he claims the government is endangering the steel sector.

The MP claims it is unsurprising that Remainers who still disagree with the outcome of the vote do not want the “burdens of overregulation” eased.

In addition to his opinions on the REUL Bill, Mr Rees-Mogg praises the UK’s implementation of the COVID vaccination and pursuit of gene-editing technologies as examples of Brexit success.

The question posed by the MP for North East Somerset is whether the government and parliament will accept the risks necessary for development or if they will “bask in the comfort of the waning sun that once shone so brightly over Europe” instead.

The statements made by Mr Rees-Mogg come after the government was compelled to reiterate its pledge to eliminate any remaining EU legislation by the end of this year at Number 10 last week.
