Labour’s David Lammy pledges full support for Ukraine, proposes new law to seize Russian state assets

Labour’s commitment to supporting Ukraine’s cause has been reinforced by one of the party’s most senior MPs, David Lammy, who is currently the Shadow Foreign Secretary.

Speaking to The Daily Telegraph, Lammy said, “We have been clear right from the very beginning that we fully support the Ukrainian people politically, diplomatically, militarily.”

In addition to this rhetorical support, Lammy revealed that a Labour government would propose a new law to seize Russian state assets in the UK and use the proceeds to finance Ukraine’s reconstruction.

The legislation, which is yet to be drafted, is based on similar plans previously suggested by Labour MP Sir Chris Bryant.

The proposal echoes a call made by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky when he addressed Parliament earlier this month.

Rishi Sunak’s administration is interested in the idea, though there are divisions in the West about the best way to deliver it.

It is worth noting that this level of support for Ukraine would not necessarily have been guaranteed under Labour’s previous leader, Jeremy Corbyn, who was a longtime critic of Nato and its expansion east, and who called for Western countries to stop arming Ukraine.
