Conservative MP Lee Anderson warns Tories risk losing next election if they don’t stop Channel migrant crossings

Conservative MP Lee Anderson has stated that the Conservative Party risks losing the next general election if it fails to control the flow of migrants crossing the English Channel.

Anderson, who is the new deputy chairman of the party, told Nigel Farage’s GB News show that stopping the boats is his “number one priority”.

Anderson added that the small boats used by migrants crossing the channel is costing millions of pounds each day.

In a separate interview with The Telegraph, Anderson accused Calais refugee charities of “fuelling” migrants’ desire to cross the English Channel in rubber dinghies.

He alleged that the organisations based in Northern France are just as bad as people smugglers.

Anderson further claimed that on a recent trip to Calais with the Commons Home Affairs Select Committee, he saw “hundreds of young men” being helped by workers at the British Care4Calais charity.

The migrants were “encouraged” to make the crossing by being taught English by the volunteers.

In response, Care4Calais denied Anderson’s claims, stating that their operations in Northern France focus on the provision of humanitarian aid and providing friendship and dignity through activities such as English lessons, football matches, and simple teas and coffees.

The charity also said that they provide no assistance or encouragement to refugees with journeys to the UK, and campaign for safe routes for people who want to seek asylum in the UK.

Last year, a record 45,756 people made the dangerous journey across the Channel from France. Prime Minister Rishi Sunak made tackling the issue one of his top five pledges in a new year speech.
