Truss, speaking for the first time as a backbench MP since 2012, expressed her support for supplying fighter jets to the war-torn country, citing her previous experience as a government official during Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in 2022.
She also stressed the importance of making sure Ukraine wins the war as soon as possible and preventing any further loss of life, urging the government to “do all we can, as fast as we can”.
Meanwhile, Johnson echoed Truss’s call for fighter jets, stating that the Ukrainians are fighting for their freedom and the cause of freedom around the world.
Johnson also warned that China is preparing to arm the Russians and called for the G7 nations to act as an “economic Nato” in response to China’s growing power and intentions with respect to Taiwan.
Truss also insisted that money seized from the Russian state be used to rebuild Ukraine and that any lifting of sanctions should be tied to reform in Russia.
He urged the government to “give them what they need, not next month, not next year, but now”.
She added that the G7 nations should develop economic tools and plans now to prevent future conflicts, rather than wait until after an invasion, as they did in the case of Ukraine.
