Jacob Rees-Mogg, a British politician, has come under fire after accusing 38% of civil servants of using mental health issues as an excuse to avoid work. In a recent interview with the Express, Rees-Mogg argued that “there are some people in the civil service who take sick leave for mental health reasons when they are not genuinely unwell.”

The statement sparked controversy and debate over attitudes towards mental health in the workplace. Critics argue that Rees-Mogg’s comments further stigmatise mental health issues and may discourage those who genuinely need support from seeking help.

Rees-Mogg’s full quote in the Express read, “I think there are some people in the civil service who take sick leave for mental health reasons when they are not genuinely unwell. They use it as an excuse to avoid work, and it needs to be addressed.”

The comments have ignited a fierce debate about the validity of mental health concerns and how they should be treated in a professional environment.

In response to the backlash, Rees-Mogg has yet to retract or apologise for his comments. Many mental health advocates and professionals have condemned Rees-Mogg’s statement, stressing the importance of acknowledging and supporting employees who are struggling with mental health issues.

They emphasise that such attitudes can perpetuate harmful stereotypes and discourage people from seeking help when they need it.

Dr Sarah Jarvis, a prominent medical expert, weighed in on the controversy, stating, “Mental health should be treated as seriously as physical health. Comments like these can make people feel ashamed to seek help and further contribute to the stigma surrounding mental health.”

Meanwhile, some supporters of Rees-Mogg argue that his comments highlight the need for better monitoring and management of sick leave policies in the civil service, ensuring that those who genuinely need support receive it, while preventing abuse of the system.

  1. Jacob has got his priorities right, the man is intelligent beyond belief, and in my personal opinion, Jacob Reece Mog is the only person who can save the Conservative party from decades in oblivion, just as the Labour party has been and still is, he needs to be 100% positive, put his name forward for leadership, give him 100% backing for the job, surround him with the best possible loyal team, or, the Tories are toast.
