Biden, who previously made unsuccessful runs for the Oval Office in 1988 and 2008, stated, “Personal freedom is fundamental to who we are as Americans. There’s nothing more important, nothing more sacred. That’s been the work of my first term to fight for our democracy.” He further added that the upcoming years would determine whether Americans have more freedom and rights or less.
In his campaign clip, Biden targeted former President Donald Trump and Republican rival Ron DeSantis, accusing “MAGA extremists” of infringing upon personal liberties and slashing the social safety net. Trump responded to Biden’s announcement, asserting that the current president has inflicted more damage on the nation than any previous administration, and vowed to defeat Biden in the 2024 elections.
Biden joins a short list of current Democratic Party candidates, including Robert F Kennedy Jr and Marianne Williamson. On the Republican side, Trump is joined by Nikki Haley, Asa Hutchinson, Vivek Ramaswamy, and Larry Elder.
