Foreign Secretary James Cleverly Welcomes Potential Chinese Intervention, Ignites Further Debate over China’s Global Influence

In a controversial move that is likely to stir heated debates on the global stage, UK Foreign Secretary, James Cleverly, has expressed support for China’s potential role in resolving the Russia-Ukraine conflict.
Cleverly’s comments, made during a recent visit to the US, underscored the UK’s stance that any intervention that can bring an end to the 15-month-long conflict is welcome, even if it originates from Beijing.
“We know that Xi [Jinping] enjoys a significant degree of influence with Vladimir Putin. If he can use that influence to deliver on what he has publicly stated that he feels strongly about – sovereignty, territory, integrity, the non-threat of use of nuclear weapons – then why would we be critical of that intervention if it is meaningful and if he actually delivers upon it?” Cleverly questioned, adding two considerable “ifs”.
Cleverly’s remarks have already drawn criticism from some quarters, including former UK Prime Minister Liz Truss, who recently called for Western nations to “get real” about the threat posed by China.
The backdrop to this contentious statement is a surge in Russian attacks on Ukrainian civilians. Recent missile, drone, and airstrikes in various Ukrainian regions including Kyiv, Kharkiv, Kherson, Mykolaiv, and Odesa mark a grim escalation of the conflict.
The Foreign Secretary urged the UK and its allies to “stick with” Kyiv, acknowledging the potential for a difficult and “scary” progression of the conflict.
Simultaneously, the White House has announced a new $1.2bn military aid package for Ukraine, featuring additional air defence systems and artillery rounds, indicating a steadfast commitment to supporting Ukraine.
Cleverly’s comments have thrust the question of China’s role in global conflicts into the spotlight. As the world continues to grapple with the fallout of the Russia-Ukraine war, the potential involvement of Beijing could represent a significant shift in the geopolitics of conflict resolution.
The ultimate impact of these developments, however, will only become clear as the situation in Ukraine continues to evolve.
